The Sharpe Ratio (SR), also called risk adjusted performance, is an important indicator needed to compare securities accounts, funds and other investment portfolios. Thereby one compares the obtained return to the risk (volatility) taken for this investment.


If two securities accounts differ in the return and in the risk rating, the “better” securities account is the one having the higher Sharpe Ratio, if all other conditions are equal.


In the negative domain, the Sharpe Ratio ceases to be meaningful and is therefore of no use when comparing securities accounts.

Volatility

Die Volatilität misst die Kursschwankung eines Wertpapiers bzw. eines Depots. Je höher die Volatilität ist, desto mehr hat das Wertpapier bzw. das Depot im Betrachtungszeitraum geschwankt – desto höher war also das „Risiko“.
